One of the key aims of BYM is to help increase employment and to support the local community in becoming more economically active.
With 13.8% of the population in Tower Hamlets unemployed (double the figure for Greater London and 4% higher than the figure for inner London) BYM recognises this as a problem area and provides special attention to it.
We have on-going sessions where, along with the assistance of youth workers, we have a qualified career advisor providing assistance to our service users who are often detached from employment and education, and who are instead involved in petty crime, gang conflict or are socially excluded.
This project has become another extension of our core projects, as more and more people are accessing the service. The growth of this project is simply due to our current service user recommendations and referrals.
Our advisors are flexible and therefore easily accessible for the local residents
Our advisors are able to relate to the concerns of those who are unemployed and bring a clear understanding of the business needs to the job searcher
We support people in their crucial early weeks or months, especially those who are new to or have been away for an extended period from the job market
Our advisors have a comprehensive knowledge of the range of learning opportunities accessible within local communities
We offer a gateway and progression into further education opportunities in particular for disaffected youth
We work closely with local employment centres and often invite local employers to the project, thus connecting service users with potential employers
