LEGAL ADVICE

Our five days a week Bi-Lingual Advice Sessions is now a long established area in the field of Welfare Rights Advice and Councelling Service. BYM is one of the leading voluntary sector organisations to provide bi-lingual welfare rights advice and information and councelling service in the Stepney, Whitechapel, Shadwell and Wapping community area. We have a large number of clients who attend our advice sessions from every corner of Tower Hamlets.

Due to inner city deprivation and increasing unemployment BYM advise sessions have become increasingly popular amongst advice seekers. Changes in Social Security benefits, Immigration Laws and Housing Policies have contributed towards the difficulties and complexities encountered by our clients.

Language and literacy problems create barriers for some clients, also the influence of their background predominate their self-expression. The majority of our clients confide in us and our advice usually overcomes the problems. Due to the demands of other advice centres in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets we recognise increasing numbers of clients with ever increasing demands and the importance of providing further service.

Our advice sessions run from 10am to 1pm and from 2pm to 4.30pm Monday through Friday at our Henriques Street site.

Our full-time Welfare Rights Advisor deals with heavy and demanding cases concerning DSS, welfare rights problems, debts, housing, hopelessness, education, employment/training, health, nationality and immigration matters, and other general advice and information.
We provide opportunities for local people to build their confidence and to have direct access to awareness of the local authority structure.
We have recognised that whilst financial cutbacks are crippling, demand for our provision of advice and councelling services are staggeringly increasing on a daily basis.
