Legal advice Services

BYM’s long established bilingual welfare rights advice & infor- mation service has been running successfully for many years; providing services for the local community in Tower Hamlets.

Due to the nature of the area, Tower Hamlets has a high number of unem- ployment and over crowdedness in housing. The ever changing policy in DWP benefits , Social Services, Immigration & Nationality and housing , policies have made the services popular and demanding.

The clients that come to our service are from different backgrounds and face low literacy and language difficulties; hence the bilingual service attracts a large number to the services. The services offers appointment and drop in sessions dealing with various issues and concerns raised by our clients, they include welfare rights, benefits, debt/ money advice, leaseholder service, Education, immigration/nationality, homelessness, employment /training, health and other matters.

Due to the demands of other advice centres in the Tower Hamlets, we recognise increasing number of clients and their demands in which our advice sessions run from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 4.30pm from Monday to Friday.

This year has seen an increase in the number of people that has used our services, due to the current economic climate and new legislations and policies. We estimate over 2000 people have benefited from the service.

Mrs K came to our advice centre with a letter from the landlord that she has rent arrears of £500. Our adviser help her and contacted the landlord and explained that she is unemployed and on benefits. Our Adviser negotiated with landlord on behalf of Mrs K and pay £10 monthly installments on top of her weekly rent. Our adviser helped her and now her problem is solved.

In addition to this, BYM also volunteers to provide bilingual welfare rights and information service in Stepney, Bethnal Green, Whitechapel, Limehouse, Shadwell, Wapping & St Katherine wards and in Tower Hamlets.
